What is LM Studio?

LM Studio is a desktop application from Element Labs that lets you discover, download and run open-source large language models entirely on your own hardware so inference and data stay local.

It’s aimed at developers, researchers and privacy-minded power users who need an OpenAI‑compatible local API and a simple GUI for rapid experimentation; notable capabilities include an in-built chat interface, an OpenAI-compatible local API server, CLI tooling and a headless daemon called llmster for server deployments, plus MCP server integration for model management.

LM Studio supports many Hugging Face models (Llama, DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral, Gemma, Phi) and offers GPU acceleration via llama.cpp and Apple MLX. The app is free as of 2026.

Honest trade-offs: running large models still requires significant VRAM or results in slow CPU inference, model quantization and compatibility can demand manual fiddling, and there’s no commercial SLA for teams that need guaranteed uptime.
