By role & team

AI tools for every role.

From solo founders to enterprise teams — find the right AI stack for what you actually do. Hand-picked categories grouped by job-to-be-done, not by hype.

Explore all categories

Designers & creators

Image generation, video editing, voice cloning, brand assets, and 3D — scored on output quality, not API hype.

Educators & students

Lesson planning, study aids, tutoring, and homework helpers — graded on accuracy, not just speed.

What is AI Gear Base

An AI tools directory built like a buyer's guide.

AI Gear Base is an independent directory of 1,162+ AI tools across 151 categories — from ChatGPT and Claude to niche tools you've never heard of. Every listing is hand-curated, every score is published, and every affiliate link is disclosed.

We test tools on real workloads — content drafting, code generation, image production, customer support, research — then score them on a published 7-criteria rubric covering output quality, pricing, UX, integrations, security, support, and methodology. Tools are re-audited every 90 days.

How AI Gear Base is different

  • No pay-to-play. Vendors can't buy placement, ranking, or favourable scores. Affiliate revenue funds the directory but never influences editorial.
  • One rubric, every tool. ChatGPT and an indie writing app are graded on the same axes — so comparisons are honest.
  • Real pricing, not headline numbers. We normalise to monthly cost for typical solo usage (~500 queries, 200k tokens) and flag loss-leader trials.
  • Hand-built tooling. Side-by-side compare, AI-quiz stack-builder, alternatives engine, deals tracker — all maintained in-house, not licensed widgets.
  • Updated weekly, retested quarterly. See the last audit date on every tool page.

Whether you're picking your first AI tool or rebuilding your entire stack, take the 90-second quiz to get a ranked shortlist tailored to your role, budget, and output goals — or browse the full A–Z directory.

Common questions

Questions we keep answering.

What is the best AI tool in 2026?
There's no single "best" — it depends on the job. For general chat and reasoning, ChatGPT and Claude top our rubric. For coding, Cursor and Claude Code lead. For image generation, Midjourney and Flux. For video, Runway and Sora. The fastest way to find your match is the 90-second quiz — it returns a ranked stack tailored to your role and budget.
Are AI tools free or paid?
Most have a free tier with usage limits, plus paid plans starting around $10–$30/month. Truly free, capable tools exist (see our best free image generators and free LLMs). We flag loss-leader trials and normalise pricing to typical monthly usage so the comparison is fair.
How do you score AI tools?
A published 7-criteria rubric: output quality (25%), pricing & value (15%), UX & accessibility (15%), integrations & ecosystem (15%), trust & security (15%), support & docs (10%), and methodology & transparency (5%). Every tool is graded on the same axes, by humans, and re-audited every 90 days.
Do you take money from the tools you review?
No. We run affiliate links on some outbound clicks — disclosed on every page — but these never affect scoring or ranking. Our rubric is published and audited quarterly. If a vendor pitches payment for placement, the pitch gets published instead.
How often is the directory updated?
Daily for new tools. Every 90 days for a full re-audit of existing listings — pricing, limits, scores. You can see the last audit date on every tool page.
Can I submit my AI tool?
Yes, via the Submit Tool button up top. We review within 7 days. Meeting our rubric doesn't cost anything. Marketing-only submissions are declined.
What's the difference between Picks and Trending?
Picks are editorial — hand-chosen by our team each quarter. Trending is algorithmic — based on views, saves, and deal claims over the past 30 days. Picks can be niche; Trending reflects popularity.
How does the AI Quiz work?
Seven questions on role, team size, budget, output type, compliance, and integration needs. We return a ranked 5-tool stack with trade-offs and the total monthly cost. Takes about 90 seconds.
Is there an API?
Yes — read-only access to the directory with rubric scores and pricing. Free tier with 10k req/mo. Used by a few SaaS portals that embed our data.
Do you review NSFW / adult AI tools?
We maintain a separate, opt-in NSFW section. It follows the same rubric but is hidden by default and requires explicit acknowledgment to view.
How do you handle affiliate disclosures?
Every outbound link with an affiliate relationship is marked with a small "aff" badge. Full disclosure policy is in the footer. Scoring is always independent of affiliate status.
Can AI tools replace my team?
Almost never — but they reliably replace busywork. Our agents test showed that even the best AI agents need human oversight on multi-step tasks. The right framing is augmentation: AI tools cut research, drafting, and coordination time so humans focus on judgment.
